How the vegan and vegetarian communities compare
The three largest communities hold about 68% of the combined membership, but the rest of the list is far from empty — that is where most of the specialised discussion happens. r/vegan is both the biggest and the busiest, with about 78 new posts a day. Per member, the liveliest is r/veganuk: 16 posts a day from 71.6K members — a smaller crowd, but an engaged one. The oldest is r/vegan, founded in 2008, and every community here is more than five years old — this is a long-established corner of Reddit.

Choosing where to post
Questions do best in r/vegetarian, the community on this list that is built around advice and help (around 10 posts a day). Asking the same thing in r/vegan often gets it removed or lost among the 78 daily posts. Competition for attention differs a lot: r/EatCheapAndVegan has 803.2K members but only about 1.9 new posts a day — roughly one new post for every 422.7K members — while r/vegan gets about 78 a day, one for every 25.5K. A strong, well-made post therefore has more room to be seen in r/EatCheapAndVegan; r/vegan is better when you want quick replies. Jokes and memes have their own home in r/vegancirclejerk; the serious communities tend to remove them, so keep the two apart.
Before posting, sort a subreddit by “Top” for the past month: it shows in a minute what that community rewards. Always read the rules in the sidebar first — each community is run by its own volunteer moderators. Our guide to searching Reddit explains how to dig through any of these communities, and the subreddit info tool gives you the stats of one we don't list.
