Choosing where to post

If you have a question, start in r/CatAdvice: it is set up for exactly that, and with about 216 new posts a day there are plenty of people around to answer. Asking the same thing in r/cats often gets it removed or lost among the 607 daily posts. Competition for attention differs a lot: r/CatsAreAssholes has 837K members but only about 2.0 new posts a day — roughly one new post for every 418.5K members — while r/cats gets about 607 a day, one for every 15.7K. A strong, well-made post therefore has more room to be seen in r/CatsAreAssholes; r/cats is better when you want quick replies. Rule sets vary: of the communities we have rules for, r/IllegallySmolCats lists 12, against 2 in r/StartledCats, so a post that is fine in one can be removed in another.

Before posting, sort a subreddit by “Top” for the past month: it shows in a minute what that community rewards. Always read the rules in the sidebar first — each community is run by its own volunteer moderators. Our guide to searching Reddit explains how to dig through any of these communities, and the subreddit info tool gives you the stats of one we don't list.
