Binance Hack: what Reddit is saying

Rising now  Published · Updated · refreshed every 20 minutes while it is rising

The Binance hack is one of the fastest-rising stories on Reddit right now. Since the first thread appeared at Oct 29, 21:09 UTC, we have counted 46 threads about it in 11 communities, led by r/technology, r/CryptoCurrency and r/Bitcoin. Combined, those threads hold roughly 63.3K upvotes and 7.9K comments so far.

The story so far

On the evening of October 29, 2026, Binance, the world's largest crypto exchange, lost billions of dollars in cryptocurrency from its hot wallets. Blockchain analysis firm TRM Labs says most of the roughly $6.36 billion left Binance wallets on ten blockchains in about 20 minutes starting at 20:05 UTC, with a second wave around 23:05 UTC; Elliptic puts the total at $6.43 billion across 11 blockchains. Binance itself estimates the impact at around $6.3 billion. Both firms call it the largest crypto theft on record, about four times the roughly $1.5 billion Bybit hack of February 2025. (TRM Labs, Elliptic, Binance)

Binance says its initial investigation suggests the incident may have started with a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop, which gave the attacker access to a service container where unauthorized withdrawals were submitted. The exchange says it has found no evidence that any wallet private key leaked, that the attack was not a single "one-click" action, and that it has not attributed responsibility to any individual. According to the BBC's live coverage, Binance later said further digging had uncovered additional points of breach. (Binance, BleepingComputer, BBC News)

Binance says user funds are safe and that it will cover all losses from its SAFU fund and company funds. It has temporarily suspended withdrawals, revoked the affected address authorisations and brought in law enforcement and blockchain intelligence partners. In its latest update (08:47 GMT on October 30, as reported by the BBC) it said deposits are unaffected and that it is on track to resume withdrawals in about 45 hours. Around $2.7 billion to $3 billion has been frozen, mostly USDT and USDC stablecoins frozen by their issuers; TRM Labs says the attacker still holds more than 420,000 ETH and 18,270 BTC that no issuer can freeze. The BBC, citing multiple reports, says Bitcoin fell about 5% after the hack. (Binance, BBC News, TRM Labs, Elliptic)

Who did it is not officially confirmed. TRM Labs attributes the attack "with high confidence" to TraderTraitor, a North Korean state-backed hacking unit linked to the Lazarus Group, and Chainalysis says it has "high confidence" in the same link. Elliptic says North Korea-linked actors are "likely" responsible, while noting that no government or law enforcement agency has confirmed the attribution. Binance has not said who was responsible; it told the BBC it is working with law enforcement to confirm the identity of the attackers. North Korea has always denied involvement in such hacks. (TRM Labs, BleepingComputer, Elliptic, BBC News)

What the sources report

These are the reports Redditors are sharing most, in the outlets’ own words. We quote them rather than paraphrase, so nothing is lost or added.

How this page is made

SubMouse watches dozens of large, safe-for-work subreddits and Google's trending searches. When several communities start talking about the same event at the same time, we group those threads into one story and publish this page, then refresh it while the story keeps rising. The counts are ours; everything said about the event itself is quoted and credited to the post or outlet it comes from. Claims in Reddit posts are unverified unless an outlet confirms them. Upvote and comment counts come from Reddit's public data via the Arctic Shift archive and can lag. Spotted a mistake? Tell us. Not affiliated with Reddit.
