Best Writing Subreddits (October 2026)

Most writing talk on Reddit happens in a few big places, but the smaller communities are where the specialists are. We checked the communities Reddit returns for “writing” and “writers”, kept the public, safe-for-work ones with at least 25,000 members that are still posting, and ranked the 14 that remain by size. Together they have 27.1M members.

How the writing communities compare

Membership is concentrated: the three largest communities hold 89% of all members on this list, so most of the writing conversation happens in a handful of places. Size and activity don't line up perfectly: r/WritingPrompts has the most members, but r/writers gets the most new posts (about 121 a day, against 54 in r/WritingPrompts). Per member, the liveliest is r/writingadvice: 43 posts a day from 60.2K members — a smaller crowd, but an engaged one. Among the communities we track weekly, r/writing grew fastest recently (+0.08%, +2.9K members since Oct 19). The oldest is r/writing, founded in 2008, and every community here is more than five years old — this is a long-established corner of Reddit.

Choosing where to post

If you have a question, start in r/writingadvice: it is set up for exactly that, and with about 43 new posts a day there are plenty of people around to answer. Competition for attention differs a lot: r/WritingPrompts has 18.9M members but only about 54 new posts a day — roughly one new post for every 350.9K members — while r/writers gets about 121 a day, one for every 2.2K. A strong, well-made post therefore has more room to be seen in r/WritingPrompts; r/writers is better when you want quick replies. Jokes and memes have their own home in r/writingcirclejerk; the serious communities tend to remove them, so keep the two apart. Rule sets vary: of the communities we have rules for, r/Screenwriting lists 12, against 6 in r/writing, so a post that is fine in one can be removed in another.

A simple rule of thumb: ask questions in the specialised communities and share your best finds in the big ones, where they can reach the most people. Always read the rules in the sidebar first — each community is run by its own volunteer moderators. Our guide to searching Reddit explains how to dig through any of these communities, and the subreddit info tool gives you the stats of one we don't list.
