How the DIY communities compare
Membership is concentrated: the three largest communities hold 98% of all members on this list, so most of the DIY conversation happens in a handful of places. Size and activity don't line up perfectly: r/DIY has the most members, but r/DIYUK gets the most new posts (about 154 a day, against 63 in r/DIY). The oldest is r/DIY, founded in 2008, and every community here is more than five years old — this is a long-established corner of Reddit.

Choosing where to post
For beginner questions, r/SolarDIY is the natural first stop — it exists for advice, and roughly 18 new threads a day keep it moving. Asking the same thing in r/DIY often gets it removed or lost among the 63 daily posts. Competition for attention differs a lot: r/DIY has 27.5M members but only about 63 new posts a day — roughly one new post for every 440.5K members — while r/DIYUK gets about 154 a day, one for every 4.6K. A strong, well-made post therefore has more room to be seen in r/DIY; r/DIYUK is better when you want quick replies. There are regional communities too — r/DIYUK and r/diynz — which are the better choice for local prices, shops, events or rules. Rule sets vary: of the communities we have rules for, r/DIY lists 10, against 4 in r/diyelectronics, so a post that is fine in one can be removed in another.
Before posting, sort a subreddit by “Top” for the past month: it shows in a minute what that community rewards. Always read the rules in the sidebar first — each community is run by its own volunteer moderators. Our guide to searching Reddit explains how to dig through any of these communities, and the subreddit info tool gives you the stats of one we don't list.
