How the art communities compare
Membership is concentrated: the three largest communities hold 73% of all members on this list, so most of the art conversation happens in a handful of places. r/Art and r/DigitalArt are the two busiest, with roughly 154 and 166 new posts a day. Per member, the liveliest is r/artcommissions: 153 posts a day from 194.2K members — a smaller crowd, but an engaged one. Among the communities we track weekly, r/oilpainting grew fastest recently (+0.19%, +2.1K members since Oct 19). The oldest is r/Art, founded in 2008, and every community here is more than five years old — this is a long-established corner of Reddit.

Choosing where to post
Questions do best in r/WhatIsThisPainting, the community on this list that is built around advice and help (around 28 posts a day). Asking the same thing in r/Art often gets it removed or lost among the 154 daily posts. Competition for attention differs a lot: r/SpecArt has 1.5M members but only about 2.4 new posts a day — roughly one new post for every 611.7K members — while r/DigitalArt gets about 166 a day, one for every 3.9K. A strong, well-made post therefore has more room to be seen in r/SpecArt; r/DigitalArt is better when you want quick replies.
A simple rule of thumb: ask questions in the specialised communities and share your best finds in the big ones, where they can reach the most people. Always read the rules in the sidebar first — each community is run by its own volunteer moderators. Our guide to searching Reddit explains how to dig through any of these communities, and the subreddit info tool gives you the stats of one we don't list.
