Cook’s judgment vs baker’s craft share

r/Cooking has an empty public description field in our directory, so we lean on activity samples and rule titles we collected: short rule titles require posts to stay on topic, include recipes when relevant, ban memes/trolling, and limit promotion. Our activity sample for Cooking is essentially all text at roughly seventy-plus posts per day—discussion and write-ups more than photo dumps.

r/Baking’s public description invites recipes, pictures, ideas and questions across cakes, cookies, breads and more. Its activity sample mixes galleries and images with a solid share of text, at a higher posts-per-day rate than Cooking in our window. One collected Baking short title bans self-promotion and other-promo links to Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook and TikTok; others ban memes and dropshipping-style spam.

Practical chooser guidance from those sources: bring technique questions and recipe write-ups aimed at other cooks to Cooking; bring bakes you want to show or baking-specific recipe threads to Baking. Neither write-up declares a “better” kitchen community—only different dominant formats in the data we hold.

  • Cooking (our sample): text-forward discussion; recipes expected when relevant.
  • Baking (our sample): heavier on images/galleries plus recipes and questions.
  • Empty directory description for Cooking is why rule/activity evidence matters more there. Neither is in the current Top list for a full SubMouse community page.

Where this comparison comes from

Member counts from SubMouse’s safe-for-work directory. Short rule titles, posts/day and post-type mixes from activity samples SubMouse collected for Cooking and Baking. No post titles or full Reddit rule bodies are reproduced.

Members and public descriptions come from SubMouse's safe-for-work directory (as of 2026-11-02 UTC); 7-day growth measured from 2026-10-26. Posts/day and post-type mixes appear when we have an activity sample. Rule lines are short titles, not the full sidebar. Directory rank is listing order — communities outside the current Top 100 open in the info tool instead of a full community page.
